The Harmony in Diversity series can be seen as a variation of the A Wind from Yesterday series, in which Fu Wenjun replaces images of poplar trees with overlays of classical Western sculptures and renowned Chinese paintings from various dynasties. In doing so, the original dialogue between nature and culture evolves into a deeper conversation between Eastern and Western cultural traditions. Western sculpture, with its pursuit of idealized form, and Chinese painting, with its emphasis on ethereal spirit and rhythm, represent two entirely distinct aesthetic ideals. Yet when Fu Wenjun merges them, there is no sense of dissonance. Through his unique approach, he interprets the concept of harmony in difference. This idea—harmony without uniformity—is a cornerstone of Chinese civilization, sustaining its vitality through the ages. In today’s world, it may also hold the key to reconciling cultural diversity with the tensions of civilizational conflict.
