Year of Creation: 2009-2011
In Illusory Metamorphoses, stylized X-ray images of the human skeleton are fused with the ancient Buddhist sculptures of the Dazu Rock Carvings. Through this composite imagery, I seek to explore themes of faith—intertwined with life and death, existence and illusion, the present and the future.
The work employs Rongchang grass cloth (a type of traditional Chinese ramie fabric) as the medium for photographic printing. This choice represents an attempt to translate intangible cultural heritage into a contemporary artistic language. Rongchang grass cloth, with a history of over a thousand years in China, now faces near extinction. Neither museum preservation nor commercial revival has succeeded in restoring its original functional value; it continues to drift away from everyday life. By embedding it within art, I hope to reconstruct a new relationship between this endangered material and the public—reviving its presence in our surroundings and allowing it to endure through a renewed form of expression.
