The realm of intangible cultural heritage has long been a source of inspiration in artistic creation. I have always held a deep fascination with ethnic and folk literature, arts, and traditional crafts. These are the very roots of cultural identity—yet in an era increasingly shaped by globalization and digitalization, many forms of intangible heritage teeter on the brink of oblivion, if not extinction. In this critical moment of cultural fading, I find myself constantly asking: how can we transcend this disappearance?
In the creation of Sounds Lingering in the Air, I bring together three elements within my images: artistic forms that are disappearing, have already vanished, or are at risk of vanishing; fossilized remnants that serve as metaphors for intangible ruins; and xiabu, a handmade ramie cloth representing a fading traditional craft. By combining these components, I seek not only to present a more distinctive way of documenting cultural relics but also to explore new possibilities in photographic expression—producing a tactile, multi-layered visual texture.
The preservation of intangible cultural heritage is a global issue—and it is both a responsibility and a calling for those of us working in the fields of culture and art. As an individual artist, what I can offer is ongoing transmission and dissemination. True inheritance requires the dedication of generations, but dissemination can happen in the present. These composed, solemn images are my form of documentation and outreach. Through my work, I hope viewers can genuinely experience the cultural spirit, belief systems, and emotional depth embedded in forms such as traditional theater, ballet, and symphonic music. While change may not be immediate, perhaps their echoes will linger on.
