In the Story of Expo Garden series, I juxtapose the ruins of the Old Summer Palace (Yuanmingyuan) with the national pavilions of eight countries from the Shanghai World Expo. An open laptop, placed within the composition, functions like a historical chronicle—narrating the profound transformations and vicissitudes of time. Through my lens, I strive to capture each moment of New China’s rise as a global power. Meanwhile, the ruins of Yuanmingyuan and the architectural presence of these national pavilions, as historical witnesses in themselves, become a camera that never stops recording—quietly observing, enduring, and recounting China’s past and present. Together, they serve as metaphors for the continuity between history and the present, reflecting not only what has been, but also what is becoming.
