From the The Chaerwa Woolen Cloak Is Disappearing series of photographs, it is evident that the places captured by the camera exist at the margins—distant from mainstream society and culture. The most immediate and striking impression these images convey is one of “barrenness” or “primitiveness.” In an age so driven by the pursuit of economic growth, it is perhaps difficult to understand why poverty and ignorance still persist. This series reflects my sense of nostalgia and deep human concern. As I have contemplated these scenes, I realized that what I truly seek is to shed the heavy burden of history I carry—to look anew at everything unfolding in front of me, and to witness this place with a fresh, unencumbered gaze.
