I once attempted to explore the meaning of totems through the lens of art philosophy and found a profound connection between the totemic imagery of prehistoric rock art and the visual-perceptual structures of modern and contemporary art. The cultural phenomena and symbolic significance implied by totems are still powerfully present in today’s society, culture, history, and everyday life. For example, the global obsession with economic growth—often at the cost of environmental degradation and harm to other life forms—reveals a belief in nature’s subservience to human needs. Is this not, in its essence, a new form of totemic worship? In my work, I juxtapose iconic landmarks representing the centers of global economy, politics, and culture with monumental animal species from the natural world. In a satirical yet humorous way, I stage scenes in which these creatures seem to engage in totemic worship of human civilization. At the same time, the image becomes a site of tension—a battleground between peripheral voices and dominant power structures. Through this approach, I intentionally create an atmosphere of mystery and surreal beauty, while underscoring the cultural significance of the totem in a contemporary context.
