Fu Wenjun’s digital pictorial photography series Harmony in Diversity was presented at the exhibition INSPIRATIONS! in Paris, France, from July 4 to September 1, 2025. The exhibition was curated by the French non-profit art institution Mémoire de l’Avenir and formed part of the Humanities, Arts and Society Project, developed in collaboration with UNESCO.

There is nothing new under the sun. Although we seem to repeatedly encounter the same situations, images, or (historical) narratives, each story and image is continually transformed in the present moment. To return to the past from the perspective of the present is an active process—one that moves through narratives, processes images, and renews meaning.

In the digital pictorial photography series Harmony in Diversity, Fu Wenjun re-examines Western classical sculpture and traditional Chinese painting, reinterpreting historical imagery to infuse it with new contemporary significance. By bringing together different aesthetic ideals, the works explore how ancient forms can inspire cross-cultural dialogue and harmony, highlighting the power of creativity to reshape understanding in a divided world.

Independent & Image Art Space presents “A Different Story: Fu Wenjun Digital Pictorial Photography Art Exhibition” from December 31, 2024, to March 2, 2025. This exhibition focuses on Fu Wenjun’s deep exploration of Digital Pictorial Photography, showcasing how he combines digital technology with traditional photography, transcending various artistic mediums such as painting, sculpture, and installation to construct a unique visual language that addresses complex contemporary social, cultural, and philosophical issues. The exhibition not only presents Fu Wenjun’s profound reflections on artistic creation but also invites the audience to explore the boundaries and possibilities of art in the digital age.
Fu Wenjun’s works focus not only on the narrative of individual identity and memory but also on the continuity and transformation of history, culture, and civilization. By integrating various artistic mediums with photography, he breaks the boundaries of time and space, intertwining historical fragments, cultural symbols, and modern landscapes. His work explores the continuity and rupture of history in a contemporary context. His pieces are not only reconstructions of cultural images but also reexaminations of historical experiences, offering a deep analysis of the conflicts and integration within the evolution of civilization. This reflection extends beyond the visual level and penetrates into philosophical inquiries about time and memory, revealing the subtle relationship between the individual and grand narratives.
Philosophical thought runs throughout Fu Wenjun’s artistic practice. His works not only reflect on the non-linear flow of time but also present a questioning of the essence of existence. Time, space, and memory in his works are compressed and reorganized, breaking the inherent logical order and forming an open, fluid narrative structure. In his works, the audience is not merely a bystander but a participant, engaging in a dialogue through the images and their own experiences, completing an introspection on the meaning of existence.
Unlike pure digital photography, Fu Wenjun’s works also incorporate the brushstrokes of painting, the structural sense of sculpture, and the spatial tension of installation art. On June 26, 2024, Chinese artist Fu Wenjun’s Digital Pictorial Photography work Golden Time was unveiled as part of the latest group exhibition Swatch Art Peace Hotel: The 24 Windows at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai. Organized by the Swatch Art Peace Hotel, the exhibition will run through August 31 and showcases outstanding works by 24 current and former artists-in-residence. Together, the works offer a rich artistic feast of multicultural fusion and diversity.
The curatorial concept draws inspiration from the building’s many windows. Artists found their muse in observing the various windows of the Swatch Art Peace Hotel—or looking out from them—creating a series of worlds, both real and imagined. At different times of day, they gazed out to sweeping city views, the captivating Pudong skyline, and the intimate gestures of passersby. As night falls, the colorful reflections in the windows shine brightly, harmonizing with the dynamic energy of the Bund.
Golden Time was created by Fu Wenjun in 2019 during his residency at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel . The work explores themes of time and space, ultimately delving into the complexity of the human inner world. Fu uses ever-changing light and shadow to fragment a still visual field, while the swinging pendulum symbolizes the passage of abstract time. The work becomes a mirror, drawing viewers in and reflecting their thoughts and feelings at a specific moment. This outward gaze transforms into inward reflection, suggesting that everyone needs a space and time that belongs solely to themselves.
On June 26, during the VIP preview, the organizers hosted a special art talk featuring Carlo Giordanetti, CEO of the Swatch Art Peace Hotel, alongside Chinese artist Fu Wenjun, American artist Haoyun Erin Zhao, and Spanish artist Juan Olivares. The dialogue brought together artistic perspectives from different cultures, offering the public a glimpse into Shanghai’s unique charm and inspiring stories. During the opening ceremony, Golden Time drew enthusiastic interest from the audience, with many expressing that the work prompted them to rethink their perceptions of time and space.
This group exhibition not only provides visitors with the opportunity to engage with exceptional artworks up close but also creates a platform for dialogue and exchange among artists, fostering the continued growth of artistic diversity.

On October 11, 2023, the third edition of the Larnaca Biennale opened in the major Cypriot city of Larnaca, with Chinese artist Fu Wenjun’s work Days Away from Home featured in the exhibition. Curated by Yev Kravt, this year’s Biennale is themed Home Away From Home and presents over 100 carefully selected works from around the world, offering audiences an engaging experience rich in artistic creativity and reflection. As the only international contemporary art biennial in Cyprus, the Larnaca Biennale has become one of the most anticipated events in the international art scene since its debut in 2018. This year’s exhibition runs through November 24, with artworks displayed across six major venues including the Larnaca Municipal Gallery, Pierides Museum, and Cultural Arts Centre.
“Home” is a fluid concept—both a physical location and an emotional symbol. In today’s highly mobile society, constant migration reshapes the notion of home, adding new layers of meaning. The theme Home Away From Home invites viewers to explore the abstract dimensions of “home” and the diverse senses of belonging that accompany it.
Fu Wenjun’s work Days Away from Home draws inspiration from rural laborers in China who migrate to urban centers, offering a poignant response to the Biennale’s theme. Known as the “Bangbang Army,” this group represents a vivid cross-section of China’s socio-economic transformation. Their personal journeys reflect that changes to the concept of “home” extend beyond geography—they encompass emotional connections to the city, memories, new identities, and aspirations for a stable life. Despite facing many challenges in urban environments, these workers exhibit resilience and optimism in their pursuit of happiness.
Through delicate artistic expression, Fu Wenjun brings their stories to life, prompting reflection on the meaning of “home” and belonging. The Larnaca Biennale provides a vital platform for artists and audiences to engage with pressing social issues while fostering cross-cultural dialogue. The event not only enriches Cyprus’s cultural landscape but also builds a bridge for international artistic exchange, infusing the timeless subject of “home” with renewed emotion and insight.
